Canon reveals PowerShot V1 Compact Camera

The way I read that table, it is focused on battery life, not overheating. That is the only explanation for shorter recording time at cold temperatures. If the camera will run off of a PD charger, then there may well be no limit to recording time other than card capacity.

I find this table.
It said it can record over 2 hours.
And funny that it says when exchange battery, it can record over 2 hours.

I want to know how to exchange battery during recording.

Very cool.

I'd pay more for more serious premium compact model with Cinema Raw or at least 400Mbs 422 Intra recording and 24-70 equvalent f2.8, even if bigger lens. As long as the cam fits in jacket pocket.

This is clearly superior to ZV1 with larger sensor and 10 bit video. It's great that Canon is pushing the quality in compacts. Now let's see how is the sensor readout speed.

Looks nice and great sensor, but I'm quite suprised by the inusual zoom lens focal of 16 to 50mm (equivalent).

Camera is aimed at self-obsessed/herd influencing market, they haven't heard about proportions yet and prefer ultra wide lens for more coverage of self handheld by self.

Hopefully more serious version is on the way, sensor and camera size/image quality combo looks very promising.

With this focal lengh range it's a replacement for smartphones rather than a complement. Larger focal lengths is where phones don't usually excel, a compact camera could fill this void. Waiting for a replacement for the G7X II for stills only, but this is not it.

Except the fact that they have not included the horse and bird eye AF, it seems like a quite nice little camera with great features. When the sensor readout is not too slow and the battery life is good, then I guess there will be a lot of potential customers!
Firmware code that any good competant Canon firmware engineer can do on their lunch break. Not sure many vlogger were clamoring for bird eye AF in a small compact however.

I'm slightly disappointed at 4k60 needing a crop, this implies that, yet again, Canon is shipping a really slow sensor. I find it strange that the fastest 'crop' sensor Canon is shipping is the one in the R7, which is still half the speed of the one in the R8!
As Richard said, it could be a matter of heat, but also of battery life. Full width requires scaling, which is very compute intensive at 60Hz and the LP-E17 is not that robust. The recording times show about an hour with a new battery and that is impressive for that battery. In the world of small there are many trade-offs.

"there is one thing that it’s missing that Canon should consider—especially for older people (me) who like an EVF more than the back LCD for photography."

The Sony ZV-1 II Vlog camera and Nikon Z30 vlog cameras don't have EVFs either. Even the US$2,200 Sony ZV-E1 vlog camera doesn't have an EVF.

I sort of got sidetracked on doing a feature Friday this week, and this opinion came out of it.

since it covers many of my thoughts on the V1, I just stuffed it here in this thread.

The R50 and 10-18 would get you closer to the size of the V1 with 16mm equivalent than the R8. I'd like to see some weather sealing and more reach.

One way or another this will come to the US (I got my M2 via Amazon, and the M11-22 from Canada before they released it here).

I’m pretty sure I’ll preorder one, assuming it’s announced here. Basically the size of my M6II without a lens, and uses batteries I already have. Focal length range is very useful, I shoot ultrawide pretty often and a fixed lens starting at 24mm (equivalent) isn’t as attractive. Only thing that would stop me is if it doesn’t shoot RAW stills, but that seems very unlikely.

unless they cripple hammer it coming global, it's in the specifications, so I would assume RAW (and also C-RAW) are there.

L (Large): 5760 x 3840 pixels
M (Medium): 3840 x 2560 pixels
S1 (Small 1): 2880 x 1920 pixels
S2 (Small 2): 2400 x 1600 pixels
RAW: 5760 x 3840 pixels
C-RAW: 5760 x 3840 pixels

if they cancel the global release or delay it, i may have to hunt down that old tutorial from the EOS-M forums on dpreview on how to buy from amazon japan and have it forwarded to the USA.

The R8 does oversampled 4k60 using that battery, so I’m not that convinced about the battery argument. IIRC the R8 can do slightly more than an hour on a single charge.

According to the manual, the R8 is battery limited to 35 or 40 min at 4k60 depending on temperature. The smaller imager should do a bit better, but maybe still not make a full hour and thus not so good for vlogging.
